Vanguard vicinity

The general vicinity of Vanguard and the Taurus Reach.

The Taurus Reach was a region of space in the general direction of the constellation Taurus as seen from Earth adjacent to the territory of the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire (who referred to the region as the Gonmog Sector), and the Tholian Assembly (who called it the Shedai Sector).

History and specifics[]

Starbase47

Starbase 47, aka Vanguard, located in the Taurus Reach.

This was considered a strategically important sector of space by all three powers in the mid-23rd century. In the year 2265, the Federation had begun aggressively establishing colonies within the Taurus Reach, and Starfleet commissioned a Watchtower-class starbase (Starbase 47, or Vanguard) in order to support and defend these new settlements.

The Taurus Reach was also the location of the planet Ravanar IV, which was visited by the USS Constellation in 2263, and was the site of the destruction of the USS Bombay in 2265. (VAN novel: Harbinger)

Mirror universe[]

In the mirror universe, the Taurus Reach was likewisea region of space bordered by the Terran Empire, the Klingon Empire, and the Tholian Assembly.

Although all three powers laid claim to the area, it was the Terran Empire which had done the most to substantiate its claim through establishing several colonies in the region, as well as the construction of Vanguard Station or Starbase 47. In fact, Vanguard Station was the center for the empire's activity in the Taurus Reach. Under its commanding officer, Commodore Diego Reyes, the personnel of Vanguard undertook extensive archaeological digs of planets in the Reach all in an effort to uncover lost technology once used by the Shedai, the former dominant species in the region. Going so far as to capture a female Shedai of unimaginable power, Reyes believed he could have the region secede from the Terran Empire and turn it into his own little fiefdom.

In 2277, Reyes' efforts were thwarted by Admiral Spock's operative, T'Prynn, and the region fell under the control of the Tholians. (VAN - Mirror Universe short story: "The Black Flag")

One hundred years later, in 2377, the Tholian Assembly, the Gorn Hegemony and the Breen Confederacy met at the site of the former Imperial Starbase 47 and agreed to form the Taurus Pact, a coalition of all three polities. (ST - Mirror Universe novel: Rise Like Lions)=
