Starfleet was the commanding authority for spaceflight services of United Earth, prior to the formation of the United Federation of Planets. The name was later adopted for the agency that filled the same role for the Federation. The agency was that which launched the Enterprise (NX-01) and later Columbia (NX-02. It was featured during the Star Trek: Enterprise novel and television series. At the time of the series, Admiral Maxwell Forrest was the commanding officer until he was killed at the Earth embasy bombing at Vulcan
